Getting ready for your first peer-to-peer rental

Renting a car from a private owner is often cheaper and simpler than going through an agency. You still need to start on the right foot. Here are the five things to check before you drive off.

1. Your licence and your age

Each owner sets their own conditions: minimum age, years of driving. They are on the listing; read them before you book.

2. Insurance

Check what is covered during the rental and the amount of the excess. If in doubt, ask the owner through the messaging.

3. The check-in

Walk around the vehicle with the owner, take photos of existing scratches and note the mileage and the fuel level.

4. Fuel and kilometres

The number of kilometres included per day is stated on every listing. Return the vehicle with the same fuel or charge level.

5. The return

Agree on a precise time and let the owner know if you are running late. One last walk around the vehicle together, and the rental is over.
